Advanced Learning in Earth Sciences & Exploration
The M.Sc. program in Applied Geology, orchestrated by the Department of Petroleum Engineering at the Indian Institute of Petroleum and Energy (IIPE), Visakhapatnam, is an intellectually rigorous and research-intensive postgraduate initiative that delves into the intricate geological processes underpinning the exploration and sustainable exploitation of Earth’s subsurface resources. This avant-garde curriculum seamlessly integrates advanced theoretical constructs with state-of-the-art geospatial technologies, sedimentological modeling, structural interpretation, and basin analysis, thereby equipping scholars with a profound comprehension of both conventional and unconventional energy reservoirs. Augmented by interdisciplinary collaboration, cutting-edge laboratory facilities, and strategic engagement with leading geoscience entities, the program cultivates a cadre of adept geoscientists poised to make transformative contributions to the fields of petroleum geology, environmental geoscience, and earth resource management on a global scale.
The goal of the 2-year M.Sc. in Applied Geology program is to produce highly skilled geologists with specialized knowledge on Mineral Exploration, Sub-surface modelling, Fossil fuel and Ground water exploration, Drilling, estimation of resources and site investigation.
Specialized curriculum designed around energy resources and exploration studies.
Strong interaction through projects, internships, and expert lectures.
Access to modern laboratories, analytical tools, and facilities.
Extensive field visits and geological mapping exposure for practical learning.
Dedicated support for placements, higher studies, and career growth.
Faculty-guided independent research projects for M.Sc students.
Admissions are based on the scores in JAM 2025. Candidates should have first class Bachelor's degree with a minimum of 60% aggregate Marks or CGPA equal to or greater than 6.00/10.00 (55% in case of SC/ST/PwD or CGPA greater than or equal to 5.50/10.00) in Geology. The minimum mark is without round-off.
Conducting independent research with faculty guidance offers a highly enriching and fulfilling academic experience for M.Sc in applied Geology students. Some of the key research areas include:
